Hintonia latiflora
Copalquìn
Family: Rubiaceae
Shrubby plant or tree that in tropical areas can get 35' tall. Often found much smaller, especially in cultivation where it is grown as a tropical shrub. Gorgeous, large trumpet flowers during monsoon. This plant has seldom seen grown in the US.
Part sun is recommended, and protect this plant from frost. Provide good drainage. Water moderately when established--often if grown in a container as a shrubby plant.
Flowers are visited by many pollinators. Probably a larval host, especially for various species of sphinx moths that use plants in this family.
This plant has a long history of medicinal use.
The native range of this species is Mexico (as close as Magdalena, Sonora) to El Salvador, in thornscrub and tropical deciduous forest.
