Ferocactus latispinus
This is a modest-sized barrel cactus that reaches over a foot tall and a bit wider than tall. It is one of the most unusual of the genus Ferocactus for several reasons: for one, they bloom in late winter, early spring (most Ferocactus bloom in late spring or summer. Also, their flowers are purple (most Ferocactus have yellow, orange, or red flowers). It’s smaller than most species in the genus too. The reddish spines are also unusual, with the central spine in each areole pointing generally downward and flat.
This is an easy plant to grow—though most people grow them in containers, they can grow in the ground too, if given a location that won’t get buried in plant debris or obscured by another shrub. Afternoon shade is a good idea, but they can take shady spots with all-day filtered sun as well. Moderate to low water during the warm season when they are actively growing. Keep more dry in winter. These plants can tolerate light frosts, but it’s best to protect them from the cold.
The genus Ferocactus is the combination of the Latin word “ferox “ meaning “wild, fierce” and the Greek word “kaktos” meaning cactus. The species name is derived from the Latin latus "broad", and spinus "spine".
This species is common in drier areas and grasslands of central Mexico and in a variety of dry scrublands, and oak forests where it is usually found growing on silty flats and plains or on rocky hillsides.
